Brent Health Matters

A successful and well attended event help by the Somali community organisations. SAAFI is one of the Somali community organisations in Brent who teamed up with Brent Health Matters and CNWLH (Central and North West London Health). 338 people attended and 130 had medical checks which included BMI and a blood pressure test. There was also many psychical activities for young people to show the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. The community, Health professional, children and families, came together to enjoy a fun filled day with Somali singers and dj’s performing.

Church road festival

We at SAAFI attended the first Church road festival hosted by the Church End community and Brent council. The festival was fantastic and had a big turn out with a wide range of music being played to represent our community. There was also face painting and free rides for the children. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the Church end community and Brent council for their climate efforts.

Rest in peace, Queen Elizabeth II

Our CEO Rhoda Ibrahim and all our staff and volunteers here at SAAFI would like to offer our condolence to the Royal Family at this extremely sad time. Rhoda ibrahim met the Queen in 2019 as part of the faith and voluntary sector and states that it’s one of her greatest honors.

Negaad project

Thanks to the National Lottery Fund, we were able to host our first family summer holiday in the Isle of White. Thank you to all those that attended and thank you to our youth project team for making the trip successful.

Queen's Jubilee Festival in Church Road

Thank you to all those that attended the Platinum Jubilee hosted by SAAFI. We had a good turnout of over 150 people which included a multitude of people from different communities. We would also like to give a special thank you to all our guest speakers which included The mayor of Brent Abdi Aden, the leader of the Brent Council Muhammed Butt and our MP Dawn Butler

Queen's Jubilee Festival in Church Road

SAAFI has been recognized by multiple groups over the past few years for the work we have been doing and will continue to do within the community.

Negaad (Sustainable) youth project

Big National Lottery awarded SAAFI £230000 to contribute £460000 youth and mentoring for 3 years in Brent

The youth programme will support 180 young people from disadvantaged communities of East African origin over 3 years. It will strengthen SAAFI’s relationship with all the youth services in Brent, bridging the gap between the Somali community and local stakeholders. The programme will support young people to achieve outcomes and goals set by themselves, these will include: - Personal development through mentoring and coaching - Development of practical skills needed to advance their future - Improved digital accessibility and skills - Applications made to Further Education if desired - Employment/volunteering placements - Improved emotional wellbeing and mental health - Improved confidence - Enabling young people to become independent leaders and to develop their personal skills and group management skills including learning positive practices from other communities with similar experience We expect you to monitor the impact your project is having on your community. We also want you to record your progress towards meeting your aims

Church Road High street challenge Fund

Church End is one of the most deprived areas in Brent, it is an anti-social behaviour hotspot, with the highest concentration of criminal activities per business (186/69) and highest high street vacancy rate (16%) in Brent. Church Road had the highest death for the first six months of Coronavirus pandemic in 2020 (ONS) which was 3 time higher than the average in the UK.

In May 2021, SAAFI (Somali Advice and Forum of Information) with Brent council and other community organisations including religious groups secured Stage 1 funding application to the Greater London Authority to improve Church Road for putting our high street in the map (Putting your street in the funding). It was followed by stage 2 – which was a wider consultation in the all the sectors of Church Road community, businesses and organisations made possible to secure 300000 in The High Streets for All Challenge will provide £300,000 funding to support the project.

 With Brent’s council matching fund of another 700000 into Church Road aims to build upon an existing council-led regeneration project. It’s a community-led partnership that focuses on:

  • supporting young people

·         community cohesion

·         addressing deprivation and wellbeing
